Member Chatter

Welcome to the Irvin High School Member Chatter.

I have changed this Message Forum to Member Chatter so we do not have two different Message Forum web pages.  Member Chatter is an ongoing dialogue between classmates. There are no topics, subtopics, etc. like there is in the Message Forum web page.

Member Chatter works when people participate - so don't be bashful! Click the "Post Response" button to add your entry.

Ditto, Glenn & John...... We want and need lots of representation of Class of '66 in Ruidoso. We always have a blast, and last year's group was made up of about 60 classmates from classes of '61 - '68.  We'll hopefully see all you guys October 17-19, 2017. Come help us keep making memories!! Let Bryson McCool (brymccool@gmail.com) or me (pgcotten@gmail.com) know if you plan to be there.  We'll publish an updated attendee list the first week of July.                             Pam (Davis) Cotten ~ class of '62

HI Pam, we thank you and Bryson for organizing this mini reunion at the Inn of the Mountain Gods from Oct. 16 - 19.  John and I will continue to remind our classmates throughout the summer.  So far, several have expressed interest in attending.

The “good old days” are gone. We were lucky to have spent our youth in those days. So much fun to be had by the innocent kids we were!

Jerry, thanks for posting.  The millenial job interview is hilarious.  That technology is way beyond me.  Thank God I am old and retired.

Hello all:

The following website was sent by Tom Pugil to David Ambrose then to me which has names and information of those killed in Vietnam. Sadly there are many names of friends of ours at Irvin. Among them are Edwin Harold Sornson and Robert Burciaga.  Ed wrestled on our 1964 team. He was a great wrestler and good friend.  I believe he graduated in 1965 but not from Irvin.   I believe Burciaga attended Irvin but not sure.  I am submitting Ed's and Burciaga's names to a board of the Vietnam Memorial so they can add their names to this memorial. It was erected last year in northeast El Paso on the grounds where other war memorials are. This is where the Flags Across America is by EPCC is. Their names were not included on this memorial as they did not know they had ties to El Paso.  I know Ed was born in Dover, De. This is probably why his name may not have been included. However, he did attend school with us!  Robert was born in Calif and buried at Ft. Bliss. He also had ties to EP. I remember him as well. I am writing this as I would like to see if anyone can provide me additional info on both these vets who gave their all in the war. I have submitted both names and hope to find any relatives of theirs to inform them. I would hope with this little information ( in Ed's case, pictures on our team and class picture from school) I have, I can have their names added by Memorial Day this year! Will keep you informed.  Thanks in advance for your help. Send any info to: jmorep@aol.com or call 915-861-6586.

John,

Thank you for your efforts here.  Could you possibly post photos of the Memorial in El Paso for those of us who don't live there?

Thanks,

Hi John.   I did not know either Ed or Robert, but feel indebted to them for their service and sacrife.  We commend you for your efforts in getting them the proper recognition.  Thanks for all you are doing.   Have a great year.

Mary and Glenn: I inserted pictures I took of the Vietnam wall but put the pictures in the Photo Gallery.  I found that Robert Burciaga is on this wall and I missed it.  That is good news.  More good news is that I received more information from a friend (who played an integral part in getting the wall) who found information on Ed Sornson!!! She found additional pictures where he graduated from high school in Dover, DE. His sister, Dee Robinson, posted on fb when he was killed. She has not posted recently so we are having trouble locating her. I want to inform her and her family that it appears we have enough information and confirmation from the pictures that the Edward H. Sornson is the same person who wrestled on our team in 1964 at Irvin High School and the person killed in June 20, 1966 in Vietnam so we will have his name engraved on the wall. I will let you know when it is a done deal!!!!

John,

I also thank you for finding this information.  I remember this fellow from Irvin.

I googled his full name, and the photos came up.

I appreciate what you are doing.

Mary

Thank you, Glenn and Mary.  I have an update on Ed H. Sornson.  His sister, Denise (Dee) contacted my friend and I. I was overwhelmed she called!!! She advised me that her family moved back to Dover, DE. in 1965, upon their father's return from his deployment.  Ed graduated from that school there. The family then moved to Calif. when their father retired from the military.  This is why Ed was buried at Ft. Rosecrans, San Diego.  She is also sending me a letter with pertinent information on Ed so I can present to the Board of Directors for the El Paso Vietnam Wall Memorial. I have been told that it will be approved based on all this information I will have but I am hoping to get a DD-214 and some information from the EP Public School District with Sandy Messer's and Janett Sarracino's help. We probably won't make it in time for Memorial Day but now shooting for Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2018 to have his name added to our Vietnam Memorial Wall. I will confirm dates later and will post that. More to come.....

Hi John, thanks again for your efforts to get recognition for Ed Sornson.   As an El Pasoan and Irvin student, he should be recognized for his service and ultimate sacrifice.   We pray for his eternal rest.

I am saddened to report that Jerry Creel, class of '64 and captain of the basketball team, passed away on March 20, 2018.  He was living in Odessa, TX at the time of his passing.  He is survived by his brother Bill, class of '65, and twin sons Joe and Jesse.  Bill is married to our classmate Jeanne Osgood Creel.  May Jerry's soul rest in peace.   We will miss him.
